REAOC wants to share information with our retirees about the following County Service through the Office on Aging:
The Senior Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (SNEMT) Program provides transportation to older adults who are in need of low cost transportation to and from medical appointments, dentists, therapies, exercise programs, testing and other health related trips.

LUNCHEON REMINDER
Our luncheons are now held at the Elks Lodge located at 1751 South Elks Lane, Santa Ana, CA 92705. All the luncheons will provide a main dish, a salad with vegetables, rolls and dessert. Coffee, tea, and ice water will also be served.
The Elks Lodge is next to the OC Credit Union building on St. Andrews Place. The major cross streets are Grand Avenue and Edinger in Santa Ana. You will find plenty of parking spaces!

MEDICARE SAVINGS PROGRAMS
If you or someone you know is having trouble paying for healthcare costs, there may be ways to save money on Medicare premiums and other costs. You can get help from your state paying your Medicare premiums. In some cases, Medicare Savings Programs may also pay Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments if you meet certain conditions. California Supreme Court to weigh pulling measure making it harder to raise taxes from ballot
The Independent reported: “The California Supreme Court is expected to hear arguments Wednesday about whether to remove a measure from the November ballot that would make it harder for the state and local governments to raise taxes. The measure would require all new and higher taxes to be approved by voters. Right now, the Legislature can raise taxes with a two-thirds vote in both the Senate and Assembly. The initiative would require statewide voters to weigh in after legislative approval, with the new tax taking effect only if a majority approves it. The measure would also change how communities can raise taxes through citizen initiatives. – – – – The court battle is pitting Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who wants it off the ballot, against business groups and taxpayer advocates, who say it’s time to rein in government spending. The fight comes as Newsom faces persistent criticism that California has become too expensive for many of its 39 million residents.” (Read More)
What to know about Gov. Newsom’s plan to offset California’s $45-billion deficit
The Los Angeles Times reports on the latest ideas out of the Governor’s office: “Newsom’s revised $288 billion budget proposal, announced Friday, projected California’s deficit to be $7 billion more than the shortfall his administration expected in January. The grim forecast was driven by lower than expected state revenues, continuing a pendulum swing from the fiscal boom of the COVID-19 pandemic. ‘These are things we worked closely with the Legislature to advance,’ Newsom said of the cuts. ‘None of this is the kind of work you enjoy doing, but you’ve got to do it. We have to be responsible. We have to be accountable. Newsom’s plan to close the deficit relies on $17.3 billion in savings from budget cuts he and lawmakers agreed to in April and using $4.2 billion from the state’s rainy day fund and budget reserves for the upcoming fiscal year. The proposed spending reductions Newsom touched on Friday also reverse and slash an additional $8.2 billion in funding in 2024-25. Newsom’s proposal includes $3.6 billion less for programs related to fighting climate change.” (Read More)
CA among worst states for elderly fraud: ranking
Patch reported: “California is among the 10 states with the highest number of elderly fraud victims, according to a recent study. Cybersecurity experts at VPNPro used data from the FBI and the Federal Trade Commission to determine the number of fraud victims aged 60 or over per 100,000 elderly residents as of 2022 for each state.” (Read More)
IRS says the number of audits is about to surge. Here is who the agency is targeting.
CBS News reported on what is really planned in the way of stepped-up IRS audits, including informatic that the IRS is not adding 87,000 Agents to its staff. According to this article: “The IRS says it is about to ramp up audits as it cracks down on tax cheats and seeks to deliver more revenue into the U.S. Treasury’s coffers. But not every group of taxpayers will face more scrutiny, according to IRS commissioner Danny Werfel.- – – – – The idea behind the new funding was to help revive an agency whose ranks have been depleted over the years, leading to customer service snarls, processing delays and a falloff in audit rates. – – – – – The IRA money has helped the IRS answer more taxpayer calls during the tax season that just ended on April 15, as well as beef up its enforcement, which led to the collection of $520 million from wealthy taxpayers who hadn’t filed their taxes or still owed money, it said. – – – – – the IRS’ strategic plan over the next three tax years includes a sharp increase in audits, although the agency reiterated it won’t boost its enforcement for people who earn less than $400,000 annually — which covers the bulk of U.S. taxpayers.” (Read More)

WHY
REAOC luncheons are held for the purpose of bringing Orange County retirees together for an afternoon of camaraderie, entertainment, and information. Friends and family are always welcome! Each luncheon features a different theme, with door prizes, and special gifts. As an added bonus, there is a valuable Progressive Drawing. They also serve as a general meeting for the membership.
